Glossary - Small words

  • Blind arcade = bricked-up row of arches, essentially being a decorative device for adding relief to an otherwise blank wall





  • Gable = the bit of a wall between the slopes of a roof, usually, but not always, making a triangle; Flemish gables, for instance, have more complicated, ornate shapes.





  • Half-timbering = an exposed frame of timber beams with an infill of one kind of another closing the space between the beams.






  • Pediment = in classical architecture, a formal, triangular gable that sits atop a focal feature like a portico or door or window
